Suspected drunk driver assaulted after crashing into home

Jul 15, 2013, 1:51 PM | Updated: 5:27 pm

A suspected drunk driver was beaten unconscious Sunday night after he crashed his car into a home in Spanaway, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Detective Ed Troyer said the 61-year-old driver plowed through a fence and into the deck of a home in the 15100 block of 2nd Ave. East. When the car came to a stop, Detective Troyer said a group of young men who were partying inside the home pulled the man from the vehicle and assaulted him.

“If he tried to run and they wanted to hold him until police came, fine. If they called police and detained him until we got there, that works too. But to take him out of the car and severely beat him only adds to the problem,” Det. Troyer said.

When deputies arrived on the scene, Detective Troyer said the crowd turned hostile and pepper spray was used to bring the situation under control.

Two partygoers were arrested and booked into jail for assault. The driver was brought to an area hospital, but will be arrested for investigation of driving under the influence.
