A SWAT team responded to a standoff near a Tacoma middle school Tuesday where a suspect barricaded himself in a shed.

Nearby Baker Middle School was placed in lockdown. Loud explosions were heard as the SWAT team moved in. The suspect was taken into custody around 12:13 p.m.

The Pierce County Sheriff used about a dozen cruisers to block off an area around 76th and J Streets near the middle school.

The incident began around 11 a.m. when a Pierce County deputy pulled over a man driving a reportedly stolen car. The sheriff’s office reports that the man reached for a gun and the deputy opened fire.

A short chase followed as the suspect fled to a nearby shed.

Two other suspects involved in the incident were also taken into custody.
