Team of carvers touring totem pole on ‘Red Road to DC’

May 25, 2021, 2:21 PM | Updated: 2:21 pm

The Lummi nation’s “House of Tears” carvers set out Tuesday from Bellingham, Wash., to drive a totem pole to the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C.

Along the “Red Road to DC,” the totem pole and team of carvers will be part of ceremonies at places important to Native Americans.

“We will be working with local tribes to perform various blessing ceremonies and working together to help each other watch out for these sacred sites,” explained head carver Jewell James.

James says the totem pole is expected to arrive to the museum next month.

He thanks the community for donating to the effort. Funds will cover gas, food, and lodging for the six-person crew. If you’d like to donate, check out the team’s Facebook page.
