Teen shot by Kent police officer during traffic stop

A teenager is in the hospital after being shot by a Kent police officer during a traffic stop around midnight Tuesday morning.
It happened near the intersection of Central Ave North and East Pioneer Street in Kent, which is near Kent Station and Mill Creek Middle School.
The teenage driver was shot twice. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in stable condition. The officer was not injured.
It appears that the officer called for backup once he discovered there was a weapon in the car.
Video from the scene shows a Volvo that has what appears to be bullet holes in the driver’s side door and shattered glass on the ground.
KIRO 7 also saw one person at the scene, who claimed to be related to the teen, being interviewed by police.
It is not clear why the driver was being stopped or what occurred immediately before the shooting.
The Valley Investigation Team is in charge of investigating the shooting.
