Watch: Gary Payton honors Griffey during ceremonial first pitch

Aug 7, 2016, 2:17 PM | Updated: 2:27 pm

Tucked inside the star-studded festivities, and dramatic comeback, at Safeco Field Saturday was a magical moment between two of Seattle’s greatest athletes.

After the Mariners retired Ken Griffey Jr.’s No. 24, SuperSonics legend Gary Payton threw a ceremonial pitch to Griffey, who was crouched behind the plate. Before the toss, Payton paid homage to Junior by flipping his cap backwards in classic Griffey fashion.

Payton later spoke about Griffey’s career and the relationship they forged. You can watch that here. Payton was not the only Seattle icon who paid tribute, with former Seahawks Cortez Kennedy and Steve Largent in attendance, as well as former SuperSonic Spencer Haywood and ex-Mariners Alvin Davis, Jay Buhner, Dan Wilson and Jamie Moyer.
