A time capsule was discovered at the Space Needle during renovation work on the 55-year-old iconic Seattle landmark.

The capsule was found on an iron beam on the observation deck. Its contents were revealed Friday.

Writing on the 1982 capsule directs it to be opened in 2002. With it being more than a decade later, it’s unclear why it remained sealed until now.

On the capsule itself was a sketch of the Space Needle by architect John Graham. Graham turned the original balloon design of the iconic building into a saucer. Inside, crews found letters, photos, and memorabilia from the World’s Fair.

Meanwhile, the ambitious $100-million construction project is underway to give the Space Needle floor-to-ceiling glass – providing visitors an uninhibited 360-degree view of the Puget Sound.
