Toronto’s CN Tower unveils risky walk, Space Needle sticks to space travel

Aug 2, 2011, 4:53 PM | Updated: Oct 10, 2012, 7:28 am

The CN Tower in Toronto just unveiled its newest attraction: Visitors can pay to walk around the outside rim of the tower, staring down at the city 1,168 feet below.

Visitors taking the walk will be outfitted with a special jumpsuit, then harnessed and tethered securely to a bar that circles the tower. The edge walk takes 20-30 minutes.

Space Needle CEO Ron Sevart says tower attractions like the edge walk in Toronto are not uncommon. He’s even seen towers that have roller coasters and bungee jumping.

“There’s kind of a fraternity of towers around the world, and so we’re very aware of what other towers are doing, but that’s really not what is on the horizon for the Space Needle,” says Sevart.

This is the second big tower announcement in just a few days, since Space Needle officials announced their Space Race 2012, a contest that will send one person on a commercial space flight.

The CN Tower walk costs almost $200, and includes a 90 minute tour of the facility. The fee also buys a Total Tower Experience Ticket, which gives visitors access to all the tower’s attractions.
