Two Whatcom County deputies were shot and injured Thursday evening after responding to a dispute between two neighbors in the Peaceful Valley area of Whatcom County, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called at about 4:20 p.m. to Kendall, where two men were reportedly shooting at each other.

Deputies arrived at the scene and attempted to de-escalate the situation with one of the men who had a shotgun. That was when one of the men shot at the deputies, injuring two of them.

The gunfire set off a massive law enforcement response from across the county. Cellphone video showed patrol cars racing toward the scene.

When law enforcement arrived, they swarmed the area.

The two deputies were taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

Authorities said Thursday evening that both deputies were alert and in stable condition.

Law enforcement said the suspected shooter surrendered and is in jail.

The Bellingham Police Department was called to investigate the shooting incident.
