9:02 a.m. Winds starting to pick up in western Washington – Winds gusting 40 to 50 mph just South of La Conner, tweets the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service says the recent rain has saturated the soil and the high winds could knock trees down.

“Tree limbs could fall. This could create power outages … I would say this could probably impact parts of the morning and afternoon commutes,” Meteorologist Johnny Berg said.

The Wind Advisory is in effect until 10 p.m.

‘Uncharacteristically strong’ storm

The Pacific storm was being called “uncharacteristically strong” for the month of April as it passed off the Washington coast.

The track of the system looks like it will help Western Washington miss a major wind event, according to KIRO 7 Meteorologists.

“Wind will be strongest for most areas of western Washington from late morning through the early evening hours,” KIRO 7 Meteorologist Nick Allard said. “Naturally, the coast and the northern islands/waters will get the strongest wind from this system with wind gusts in the 40-55 mph range most common with isolated higher gusts. The wind may start a bit earlier east of the area in the east Puget Sound Lowlands. We’ll keep an eye on that area for some of the strongest wind inland.”

On his blog, University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences professor Cliff Mass writes, gusts could “reach 60-70 knots along the Oregon/southern WA coast.  This means power outages along the coast.”

Mass explains that the storm itself is a very “a unique, first time event” based on the pressure forecast and anomalies across the map.
