Authorities are investigating after a potential use of force incident with Everett police officers, during an arrest of a 31-year-old man.

The officers reportedly deployed their Tasers while arresting the man, who later needed to be hospitalized.

At around 8:20 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a “suspicious call” at 1510 Broadway in Everett, and arriving officers found the 31-year-old man at the scene when an altercation ensued.

No timeline for Office of Independent Investigations use of force cases to begin

Multiple officers fired their Tasers before the man was taken into custody, according to the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART), the countywide agency that is responsible for investigating police use-of-force incidents.

Medics responded to the scene and evaluated the subject, where he was cleared and transported to the Snohomish County Jail.

He was taken to the Snohomish County Jail where, during his booking, medical staff noticed he was exhibiting “medical symptoms.” Staff determined he needed medical clearance from the hospital to be booked in jail and so sent him to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett for further evaluation.

The man was initially evaluated for potential internal injuries, but hospital staff determined his symptoms were “consistent with a prior medical condition.”

The man is expected to be released from the hospital within 24 hours, as of Sunday morning,  before he will later be booked into the Snohomish County Jail for third-degree assault according to SMART.

SMART will continue to investigate whether the officer’s use of force was justified, and two Everett Police officers are on paid administrative leave as is standard for these investigations.
