A study from the University of Washington suggests men who do housework like cooking and cleaning, get less sex that those who mow the lawn and fix the car.

“What we found, in couples where the husband does more of what we call non-core housework, which is the traditionally male task like doing the yard work, cleaning the house, those couples have more sex,” says Dr. Julie Brines, a sociology professor and co-author of the UW study.

Couples that observe the more traditional gender roles in household tasks reportedly had sex 1.6 times more a month.

The study finds housework is something people use as a small yet important way to express gender roles, masculinity and femininity.

“Expressions of masculinity or femininity that people see when they do certain types of activity like scrubbing the floor or auto maintenance, those are the same expressions of identity that we find attractive about the other partner,” says Brines.

The study will appear in February’s American Sociological Review.
