Video: Widow of randomly-shot, killed Federal Way man asks for justice

City council meetings can often be filled with process and debate, but Tuesday night’s Federal Way council meeting took on a different tone.
The wife of a Federal Way shooting victim was present on Tuesday when the city council played a video she made. Using sign language, Marianne Gutierrez explained how her husband was killed.
On May 10 around 11 p.m., Adam Gutierrez was walking his dog in Federal Way. He had just finished a run in preparation for a marathon and was wearing a reflective vest for safety. That’s when he was shot and killed on the sidewalk. Gutierrez, 30, was one of three to be fatally shot in Federal Way within 48 hours — there were a total of four shooting victims.
The shooting is being called “random.” Federal Way police said that Gutierrez was not connected with any criminal activity and have cautioned residents against going out late at night, especially in secluded areas. Police also recommend that people go out in groups at night.
“He was walking with the dog close to here, close to our home, just down the street,” Marianne said. “And someone shot him.”
Adam Gutierrez was about to be the first in his family to graduate from college — the University of Washington with a degree in electrical engineering. He was an eight-year veteran of the US Navy and served on the USS Nimitz based in Bremerton.
Marianne made the video to make the deaf community aware of the situation and to warn people to be careful at night. She also asked for any information to help authorities find the person who shot her husband.
“We need to fix our community,” she said. “We need to find the problem and come together as a community — a real community and help each other. I don’t want another person to lose their life this way. I don’t want another family to have to go through this grief.”
“Adam trusted Federal Way and then this happened to him,” she said. “Now I’m putting my trust in all of you.”
