Villain launches petition to ban self-proclaimed ‘superheroes’

Aug 22, 2012, 6:56 AM | Updated: 8:37 am

It’s not exactly Superman versus Lex Luther, but self-proclaimed Seattle super-villain Rex Velvet is stepping up his rivalry with so-called superheroes like Phoenix Jones.

Velvet has launched an online petition to outlaw the superheroes that have taken to local streets on their own in the fight against crime.

Just over 200 people had signed the petition as of Tuesday morning. It calls on Gov. Christine Gregoire to outlaw all “masked superhero vigilante crime fighters.”

In the petition, Velvet writes “Superheroes are menaces to our city. They disturb the peace, rudely interject themselves into the business of others, and escalate private confrontations. Not to mention they pepper spray citizens. Sadly, our cities are no longer protected by our once respected police force, but by tormented, delusional freaks in masks.”

Among the comments posted in the petition, one person writes “vigilantism is not needed, but community. Someone wearing a mask just adds silliness when sober-minded, decent, common-sense community building is needed… without masks, grounded in reality.”

No word yet from Phoenix Jones or any of his his masked counterparts.
