Walla Walla Library finds stash of beer and gum from 1980s

The Walla Walla public library has been closed to the public since March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has given them time to do renovations, the library director told CNN.
After removing a corner panel on some 1970s-era shelving with an open top, five full cans of Hamm’s beer and an opened pack of Godzilla Heads gum were found in a moldering paper bag.

“Along with the usual dust and dead bugs, he found five unopened cans of ‘the beer refreshing’ and some monstrously stale gum still in its vibrant packaging, along with a moldering paper bag. Someone had apparently taken a cue from ‘Treasure Island’ and stashed their booty behind the shelving, but then wasn’t able to retrieve it,” Walla Walla city officials wrote on Facebook.
The library was able to do a bit of sleuthing in theorizing how long the abandoned products were there. They determined that since Godzilla Heads gum dates back to the 80s, and because the rule requiring warnings on alcohol was enacted in November 1988, the goods probably date back some 30 years.
“Talk about a long shelf life!” city officials added.
The relics have since been transferred to the Sudbury Landfill.
