Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson reached a milestone Wednesday when he filed his 50th lawsuit against President Trump.

Lucky number 50 — known commonly as the gold anniversary — involves the Endangered Species Act, alleging the Trump administration undermined it by making it so “any endangered species that may recover enough to be down-listed to threatened status would lose automatic blanket protections.”

Ferguson’s history with suing Trump is extensive, to say the least. In a news release, the Washington State AG’s office broke down each one:

  • 26 — more than half — involve environmental protections (record: 13-0);
  • 11 relate to immigration (record: 4-0);
  • 7 relate to health care access (record: 2-0);
  • 2 relate to consumer protections for student borrowers (record: 1-0);
  • 1 relates to 3D-printed guns (record: 1-0);
  • 1 relates to the military transgender ban; and
  • 1 relates to net neutrality.

Of those 50 lawsuits, Washington state is the lead plaintiff in 19, having filed various amicus briefs with other states for many of the remaining cases. Ferguson has won 21 total suits against the Trump administration, 13 of which can’t be appealed.

Ferguson deems the taxpayer burden of these cases as “negligible,” citing the fact that his office is in the process of 20,000 separate “legal matters,” making his 50 Trump lawsuits something of a drop in the bucket.
