It was just over a week ago when the Pacific Northwest experienced temperatures well above the seasonal averages and now the region is about to be hit with temperatures well below the norm.

“We’ve seen this in the past, believe it or not, where we essentially go from one extreme to another,” said Ted Buehner, with the National Weather Service, Monday morning.

And what an extreme it is. On June 5, the National Weather Service reported record temperatures in Olympia (94 degrees), Bellingham (85 degrees), and Seatac (93 degrees). A heat advisory was in effect through the evening that day.

Now, the Weather Service says it isn’t heat we need to be aware of, it’s snow.

An unseasonably cool weather pattern is expected to drop snow levels down to approximately 4,000 feet. High temps will dip to near-record lows, according to Buehner. Snow showers are possible in the mountains Monday and Tuesday as rain soaks the lowlands.

Puget Sound area residents will see highs in the low 60s and lows in the mid-40s, possibly through Wednesday. It will begin warming up Thursday. Temperatures should reach the low-70s by the weekend.
