Snow falls across areas of Western Washington

Dec 12, 2016, 5:49 AM | Updated: Feb 8, 2017, 11:40 pm

Snow continued to fall, particularly in areas north of Seattle as a Winter Weather Advisory expired Monday morning for parts of Western Washington.

Meteorologists expected up to 3 inches of snow in Whatcom County before showers petered out.

The snowfall and icy conditions forced Bellingham Airport to close its runway.

Several school districts canceled classes.

In the mountains, I-90 and Highway 2 are covered in compact snow and ice. The National Weather Service says 2 to 6 inches is possible in the passes.

The rest of Western Washington is mostly seeing scattered showers.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures throughout Western Washington will be in the mid-20s to low 30s through the week.

Monday’s snowy weather comes on the heels of last week’s storm, which led to the first measurable snowfall for many lowland areas in years.

More snow possible this week

Though the level of certainty is relatively low, the National Weather Service says more lowland snow is possible for Western Washington later this week.

A system expected to move in late Wednesday or — more likely — Thursday could bring snow, according to the Weather Service.

“The air mass over the area should be cold enough for lowland snow,” the Weather Service writes.

The chance for snow will “probably linger” into Friday.

The Weather Service says snow on Thursday will be more likely from the greater Puget Sound area southward.
