Lakewood police say they’re investigating a homicide after a woman was found dead Thursday afternoon at a barbershop.

Investigators said a 57-year-old woman’s body was found in the 9100 block of Veterans Drive Southwest.

Lakewood police said two people were taken into custody in connection with the homicide.

Before the woman’s body was discovered, police said they received reports about a man running around with a machete and arrested him.

It is unknown if the two incidents are related at this time.

What is known is that Lakewood police are reporting that they were following calls about a couple working their way through the area. At 11:53 a.m., someone called 911 to report that a man tried to steal his car in the 9100 block of Highland Avenue Southwest.  The suspect claimed he needed the car to take his girlfriend to the hospital. He then hit the 76-year-old driver with some cans. The driver used a golf club to defend himself. After further assaulting the victim with an air compressor, the two suspects ran away.

Police received other reports within minutes of a fighting couple matching the suspects’ descriptions. At 12:01 p.m., a burglary was reported to 911 in the 8700 block of Highland Avenue Southwest. The caller said an unknown man was in their garage demanding their car keys. The male suspect had a knife or a machete. The caller armed themselves with a gun and the suspects left the garage. The caller said they were trying to get into other cars as the left.

Police caught up with the male suspect in the 12500 block of Naomilawn Drive Southwest at around 12:14 p.m. He was inside a truck and was not complying with officers’ commands. The man held a machete-style knife to his neck repeatedly. He eventually surrendered to police at around 12:46 p.m. The female suspect was also taken into custody.

The male suspect is described as 31 years old, black, 5’8″ and wearing black clothing. The female is 38 years old, Hispanic, 5’4″, heavy, and wearing dark clothing.

During this same time, nearby, a call about a suspicious death at the barbershop was made to 911. A 57-year-old female was pronounced dead at the scene.
