Last chance to vote for liquor and tolls

Nov 7, 2011, 12:00 PM | Updated: Nov 8, 2011, 11:53 am

vote 3Election day is upon us, and liquor and tolls are the most contentious issues on this year’s ballots.

Your ballot must be in the mail and postmarked by Tuesday, or you can drop it off at one a number of ballot boxes in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. The deadline is 8p Tuesday.

The race that’s gotten the most attention and money is I-1183, which would privatize liquor sales and allow retailers to sell liquor. Costco has spent over $20 million in favor of I-1183. Supporters argue it makes money for the cash strapped state and gets government out of a business it shouldn’t be in, while critics say it’s a threat to public safety by expanding access to alcohol and the state could make a lot more by staying in the business itself.

Initiative 1125

Initiative king Tim Eyman is at it again, this time setting his sights on the way the state implements tolls going forward.
I-1125 would require legislators vote for and set rates for tolls, instead of a commission of experts. It would also block light-rail on I-90. The measure has the backing of Bellevue developer Kemper Freeman Jr., who’s given more than $1 million to the campaign.
Critics say it’s nothing more than a transparent effort to kill light-rail to the Eastside.

Seattle $60 car tabs

In Seattle, we’ll be keeping a close eye on a controversial measure Proposition 1, which would increase car tabs by $60 to raise money for transit, road and other transportation related projects. While a portion is dedicated to road repairs, a good portion goes to transit and increasing bike lanes and other measures aimed at getting people out of their cars.

Backers argue it’s badly needed to keep the city moving forward and make badly needed repairs, while critics say the measure doesn’t specify where much of the money would be spent, and unfairly hits the city’s poorest residents.

Also in Seattle, every seat on the Seattle School Board is up for grabs, and the big question is whether the incumbents can survive a series of scandals.

In Snohomish County, the race between incumbent County Executive Aaron Reardon and Republican Mike Hope has been increasingly bitter, with Reardon most recently accusing Hope of dirty tricks in the wake of word surfacing last week a formal complaint was filed against Reardon for mis-using his office for personal gain. He vehemently denies the charges.

We’ll have all the results for you here at MyNorthwest.com as soon as they are released starting Tuesday night at 8p.
