The Bill Radke Treatment: You’re going to die, so what’s the big deal?
You’re going to die so you might as well talk, argue and laugh about death, on “The Bill Radke Treatment.” When Gaddafi does it, or a bunch of tigers and lions and giraffes in Ohio do it — well, OK, that’s news. But for most of us, dying is the ultimate non-news. The most ordinary […]15 years ago
Video: Were smart phones meant to do dumb things?
Posted by Alyssa There is a Geico commercial where the narrator poses this very question. And while our smart phones can do smart things, like give us directions to our needed destinations from precisely where we’re standing, when we need directions, that’s not all they do. Smart phones CAN do dumb things. That doesn’t mean […]15 years ago
This is what democracy sounds like-“Occupy” gets its own theme song
Chant after me:
"What do we want?"
"Something besides the same old, cliche worn chants you hear at every protest."
"When do we want it?"
"NOW!"
And slowly but surely, the Occupy Wall Street, Seattle and other cities movement seems to be getting the message...at least the music. After a month devoid of its own theme song, the guitar duo "emma's revolution" has taken up the cause with "Occupy the USA," a catchy little ditty in the spirit of Joan Baez or Country Joe and the Fish ("And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for...")
They aren't the deepest lyrics ever written, but they get the point across. Actually, multiple points, observes 97.3 KIRO FM's Dan Restione on Seattle's Morning News.
"It's a scattergun, they're hitting it all," Restione says.
In one stanza, he counts a handful of social issues, from foreclosure to pensions to hedgefunds to health care.
"I don't know what 'jobs for justice' means, but that's one," he laughs.
You can listen for yourself:
Listen to Seattle's Morning News on the new Occupy protest songs
Here's a sample:
Welcome to the US occupation
To win the hearts and minds
Defend all humankind
Tell the banks and the corporations
We're here to occupy the USA
The Congress and the hedge funds
Stole our houses and our pensions
Conspired to steal our healthcare
At Conservative conventions
We're here to stand our ground
We demand our jobs with justice
We're 99% in charge
Now you'll just have to trust us
It'll need some work before it reaches the pantheon of protest songs.
What's your favorite? The list is endless and depends on your age and allegiances. The music site Spinner has a pretty good top 20, some obvious like Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Edwin Starr's "War", to lesser known like the Clash's "Clampdown" (the Clash should be required listening for any protest movement, but I digress.)
Surprisingly, there's little mention of what's probably the quintessential American protest song, as appropriate today as it was when Woodie Guthrie first wrote it:

Photo: Not the 99 percent
Posted by Alyssa The “haves” and the “have nots,” that’s how a lot of people have categorizing those who call themselves the 99 percent and those who are qualified as the one percent. This image bucks the traditional image of the kid coming out of college, plainly stating they’re not with the 99 percent. I’m […]15 years ago

When it comes to the history of Seattle music, talk naturally turns first to Nirvana or Jimi Hendrix. But the city has been home to groundbreaking sounds since the first settlers sailed into Elliott Bay.

Flu fears prompt handshake warnings – Is the fistbump better?
It’s the automatic way many of us greet each other. But as flu season approaches, some health experts recommend it’s time to end the traditional handshake, and go with a “safe shake” like an elbow bumb or bow instead. Really? “Certainly this would help to decrease the spread of some infectious agents in the same […]15 years ago

Who the heck is Chris Christie, and why does everyone want him to run?
First it was Romney, then Bachman, then Perry. But they’ve all seemingly fallen by the presidential wayside as the GOP is suddenly taken with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as the best bet to unseat President Obama. He generated big buzz with a high profile speech Tuesday night at the Reagan Library in Southern California. […]15 years ago
