3 Washington Democrats join GOP to condemn ‘horrors of socialism’

Washington state’s congressional delegation split Friday as the U.S. House voted to approve a resolution denouncing the “horrors of socialism.”

The vote came just hours before President Donald Trump met with New York’s incoming democratic socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, at the White House.

Among Washington Democrats, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-3), Kim Schrier (WA-8), and Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) broke ranks and voted “yea,” joining all Republicans and 83 other Democrats in supporting the measure. Other representatives, including Pramila Jayapal (WA-7) and Adam Smith (WA-9), opposed it, while Suzan DelBene (WA-1) and Rick Larsen (WA-2) did not cast votes.

The vote came amid heightened national attention on Seattle, where Seattle Mayor-elect Katie Wilson, also a democratic socialist, drew sharp criticism from Trump.

Just days ago, Trump suggested Seattle could lose its six scheduled 2026 FIFA World Cup matches if federal officials deem the city unsafe under Wilson’s leadership. In remarks from the Oval Office, Trump labeled Wilson “very, very liberal-slash-communist.”

The Republican-led resolution that passed on Friday condemns socialist regimes and their historical abuses. GOP leaders framed the vote as a rebuke of Mamdani’s election, calling him the “radical face” of the Democratic Party.

Democratic leaders in Congress pushed back on the GOP’s framing, arguing the resolution was misleading and overly sweeping. Still, they stopped short of issuing a formal recommendation against the measure.
