Washington state Sen. Rebecca Saldaña kept a 21-point lead in Wednesday’s results in the race for King County Council District 2.
Saldaña has 60.19% of the vote so far, while Port of Seattle Commissioner Toshiko Hasegawa trails with 39.14% in the contest for that council seat.
At a Seattle Channel debate this fall, both candidates were asked how they’d improve oversight after an audit found $13 million unaccounted for at the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA).
Hasegawa wants funding freezes for mismanagement. She said disbanding KCRHA would be unacceptable because it would put more people on the streets.
“What is acceptable is making sure there are strong safeguards in place,” Hasegawa said.
Saldaña said government and community organizations must share responsibility.
“For me, it’s about mutual accountability,” she said.
