Washington Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA) announced he will not seek reelection in 2026.
The representative from Sunnyside has represented Washington’s Fourth District for more than a decade. His career concludes with more than 25 years in public service.
“I am announcing today that I will not seek reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives,” Newhouse wrote in a statement Wednesday morning. “Serving the Fourth District of Washington has been the honor of my life, and this decision comes with no reservations or remorse, only gratitude for the tremendous opportunity to have represented my home state in Congress.”
In his statement, he thanked his constituents, colleagues, and family for their support. He also pledged to continue serving with energy and enthusiasm until the end of his current term.
Before his announcement, 42 House members — 23 Republicans and 19 Democrats — decided not to run for reelection next year, according to Ballotpedia.
One of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach President Donald Trump
One of the defining moments in Newhouse’s career occurred when he became one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach President Donald Trump after the January 6, 2021, attack at the Capitol.
“Last week, hateful and un-American extremists stormed the U.S. Capitol, attacking both the structural embodiment of our Republic and the values we promote as citizens of this great nation,” Newhouse wrote in 2021 after the Capitol attack. “This violent mob, intent on disturbing the constitutional duties of Congress, resulted in the tragic loss of American lives, including a U.S. Capitol Police officer. The mob was inflamed by the language and misinformation of the President of the United States.
“Turning a blind eye to this brutal assault on our Republic is not an option,” Newhouse added.
Trump has since targeted Newhouse after his impeachment vote, backing Jerrod Sessler, who is closely aligned with Trump’s MAGA movement, to overtake Newhouse’s seat.
Trump had previously called Newhouse a “Weak and Pathetic RINO” who “voted to, for no reason, Impeach me.”
Newhouse defeated Sessler by six points (approximately 17,000 votes) in the 2024 election.
