President Donald Trump has nominated Pete Serrano to become the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington.

The White House released Trump’s list of nominations on Monday. However, Sen. Patty Murray strongly opposed Serrano’s nomination.

“The people of Washington state deserve a serious U.S. Attorney who will follow the law, not a political loyalist who thinks the law is whatever the president says it is,” Murray said in a statement. “I will be using every tool I have to block this nomination.”

Pete Serrano previously served as Pasco mayor, ran for WA attorney general

Serrano was appointed as special attorney to the attorney general and the first assistant for the Eastern District of Washington in January.

Before his appointment, Serrano was the mayor of Pasco.

In 2024, Serrano announced his run for Washington State Attorney General, marking the first Republican to file paperwork in that year’s election.

“Washington state is in trouble,” Serrano stated in a news release alongside his announcement. “Criminal activity is at an all-time high. Fentanyl overdose deaths are skyrocketing and ripping communities apart. And no one is doing anything about it. As Washington’s next Attorney General, I will make it my number one job to ensure criminals are prosecuted, drug dealers are incarcerated, and our police officers know the state’s top cop has their back.”

Serrano has a Bachelor of Arts in Italian from the University of California, Davis, a Juris Doctor from Florida Coastal School of Law, and a master’s degree from Vermont School of Law.

The attorney has lived in eastern Washington since 2015 and became involved with the Pasco City Council in 2017.
