City of Seattle issues Stage 2 Burn Ban

The City of Seattle has joined King County in issuing a Stage 2 Burn Ban as dry, hot conditions persist.

During a Stage 2 Burn Ban, any outdoor fire, such as a backyard fire pit or campfire, is prohibited.

“Under the ban, any person with a recreational fire who fails to take immediate action to extinguish or discontinue when ordered or notified to do so can be charged with, up to and including, a misdemeanor,” the City of Seattle stated.

Seattle firefighters have also been directed to put out any illegal fires during the ban.

Outdoor devices allowed during burn ban

Portable outdoor devices, such as barbecues and patio warmers, are allowed as long as they are used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Approved fuel devices, including those that rely on charcoal, natural gas, or propane, are allowed.

The Seattle Fire Department has responded to more than 350 bark and brush fires throughout the city since Memorial Day.

Officials urged the public to follow the burn ban, safely discard any smoking materials, check vehicles to ensure nothing can drag and create sparks, and avoid parking on dry grassy areas, as hot components could start a fire.

Anyone who sees a brush fire is asked to call 911 immediately, so fire crews can respond as quickly as possible.
