Medved: Georgia’s voter bill is ridiculous, but it’s not Jim Crow

Mar 26, 2021, 4:03 PM | Updated: Mar 29, 2021, 5:44 am

Democrats have said the voting legislation effort in Georgia and steps in Republican state legislatures elsewhere are intended to suppress the voice of minority voters.

“This is Jim Crow in the 21st century,” President Biden said in a statement. “It must end. We have a moral and Constitutional obligation to act.”

Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation in the South until as late as the mid-20th century.

While he admits it’s not a great bill, KTTH’s Michael Medved told KIRO Radio’s Gee and Ursula that Georgia’s voting legislation is absolutely not Jim Crow.

“The thing about giving people food in line is idiotic, but it’s based upon the notion that, in many states, and Georgia is one of them, you’re not supposed to do any campaigning within a certain distance of a polling place,” he explained.

Essentially, bringing people water, Krispy Kreme donuts, or snacks while they wait in line to vote is a form of campaigning. It might amount to voter suppression if the bill stipulated that the water rule applies only to certain neighborhoods or districts, but the bill doesn’t say that.

Listen to what Michael believes about voting bills, gun laws, President Biden’s first press conference, and challenges at the U.S. Southern border:

You can hear Michael Medved every week day from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. on KTTH. Also, listen to him join KIRO Radio’s Gee and Ursula Show every Friday.
