At what point do we say that we have a racist president?

I was feeling a little under the weather this weekend, so I didn’t pay close attention to the news. I was busy taking Alka-Seltzer Cold every 4 hours.

So it was a bit of a shock to me when I opened up Twitter to get ready to watch the Seahawks game on Sunday.

I quickly realized that I needed to choose between rooting for (and I apologize in advance for my language) a bunch of “sons of bitches” or the American Flag.

Now I normally wouldn’t use that kind of language on the Ron & Don Show, but that’s a direct quote from the President of the United States of America.

Just in case you missed it, President Donald Trump, at a campaign rally in Alabama, said “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired. He’s fired.'”

There is a legion of people smarter than me who are breaking this down in terms of its meaning to our society at large, but I wanted to throw my two cents in.

What are we talking about here? I mean seriously? Really?

There are a thousand issues I could point to from Trump’s labeling after Charlottesville — the “very fine people” who just happened to be carrying Nazi flags — to the myriad of photos of him not putting his hand over his own heart during the national anthem.

But I think I’m going to leave those arguments for people better positioned to make them. After furiously scrolling through stories online, I was left with a sadness. I felt deflated as an American.

With all of the truly important things that need to be addressed right now, this is what our president chooses to do?

Just off the top of my head, the US is dealing with:

  • A critical Health Care reform bill
  • Two of the biggest, most savage hurricanes in history
  • Millions of American citizens in Puerto Rico in dire need of help
  • An unprecedented opioid crisis
  • Oh, and that whole nuclear war thing with North Korea.

I could go on, but I think you get the point. This country could really use some solid leadership right about now. Instead, the leader of the free world is trolling Steph Curry on Twitter.

“Oh, you don’t want to come to the White House. Well you’re uninvited.”

My high school-aged niece has more maturity that that.

I’ve tried very hard to keep my respect for the office of the presidency. That’s how I was raised. It is getting more and more difficult to separate my personal disappointment with Donald Trump from my patriotism.

We’re not even 20 percent through this term. How in the world does this thing end?
