I don’t think that’s the answer. I see people of all ages drive dangerously every day. I was a pretty responsible driver at 16. No thanks on the extra government restrictions.

We go at this all wrong. Age has nothing to do with skill and aptitude. Age limits are silly. If you can show proficiency and responsibility, you should be able to drink, own firearms, go to war, vote, and yes, drive a vehicle.

This tragic accident happened because of what appears to be a series of bad choices. It’s so devastating to the family of the young man who died, and scary for those who were injured, but this ultimately isn’t an age thing. If it were an age thing, we wouldn’t have this happening to 20-, 30-, and 40- year-olds, but we do. I hesitate, but ultimately cannot help but wonder where the parents were. It was 3 a.m. Why in the world were they out? At the end of the day, those questions will be overshadowed by the immense grief and pain left behind by this loss. A change in the laws will never fix that.

That’s like the Left’s reaction to shootings — penalizing the majority for the actions of a few. Parental teaching is the answer. Some 16-year-olds have jobs. They have sports practice. How do they get there? This is like throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

More driver’s ed is needed

Yes, 16-year-olds can be responsible enough to drive. But in today’s world, it’s about how fast you roll the students in and out of classes. I do believe there should be changes. I believe six months of student driving is not enough. Classes should be longer, and there should be more supervised driving, not just 50 hours of drive time. One year of driving time is beneficial for any student to have many different experiences. From 15 to 16 I drove all over this state. I logged in 12,000 miles and went to Seattle, Spokane, and Portland. I went on ferries. I was ready for my driver’s license when I reached 16.

AG Ferguson sues Navy over NAS Whidbey noise

We appreciate knowing the Navy protects us

Hi Dori, my wife and I have lived in Anacortes for over 60 years. Our first house in the 1970s and the house we live in now going on 10 years have both been on the south side of Lake Campbell, within a few miles of Ault Field. I can’t comment on OLF Coupeville, but we have always appreciated the safety that our Naval station has provided — probably a little more since 2018 because we were on Oahu when the false imminent danger alert happened.

Yes, maybe in the ’70s we might have missed a few seconds of dialogue on the TV or radio when the jets go overhead, but now we just pause the TV for a few moments with our remote. It’s not much of an inconvenience knowing the quick response our Navy station could undertake if North Korea attempted a real attack.

To conclude, it’s always a pleasure when shopping in Oak Harbor because of the genuine friendly community. And on occasion, when we have the good fortune to see three Growlers in unison fly over, we are awestruck. It’s like our own private airshow.

What about the other side? 

Hi Dori, I love your show and listen to it as often as I can. Regarding your interview with the mayor of Oak Harbor over the Growler noise complaints, I was a bit taken aback that you didn’t interview or address the complaints from the ‘other side.’ I’ve lived here my whole life, so I understand how entitled a lot of these ‘anti-jet-noise’ residents are, but recently the number of complaints has grown due to rapid Navy expansion. We understand this is a Navy town, we’re all pro-military for the most part, but the fact that the Navy wants to bring in 36 more Growlers (specifically EA-18Gs) with no concern or impact studies done for the local residents and wildlife is reckless. If studies were done, they were never shared with the public. Also, we don’t need more people moving here; this is a rural community with roads and neighborhoods not made to fit this many people.

They are also ignoring the other residents on the south end of the island who are just now having to deal with this after years of living here with no complaints or worry of jet noise. The Navy asked for no one’s opinion except their own. Blind patriotism and allowing the military to do whatever it wants without thought and consequence is reckless. I’m sorry, but criticizing our military isn’t unpatriotic or liberal, it’s how we maintain our checks and balances. Ferguson is scum, but don’t let your hatred blind you to the facts being presented on both sides.

Kids should not decide gender identity

Dori, I couldn’t agree more with you. Wow, that feels really weird to say. But when it comes to parents allowing their kids to make gender-identifying decisions, you are absolutely right. And not to discount all of the “gifted children” out there (eye roll), but kids are not the smartest. That’s why we spend 18 years trying to educate them. They are not mentally prepared to make these decisions at this young of an age, and parents should be ashamed that they are pushing their political views on unknowing kids whom they are supposed to be protecting and nurturing, not manipulating and capitalizing off of. And for the record, I am a Left-leaning, Independent-Republican for all the social justice warriors who will assume I’m a Right wing, MAGA-hat-wearing, Trump-supporting racist.
