Early VEEP choice could mainstream Trump’s campaign

If Donald Trump wants to revive his faltering campaign he should make a bold move and offer the Vice Presidential nomination to Paul Ryan — even with the understanding that the House Speaker probably won’t accept it. The gesture of honoring Ryan in this way would make it clear that he wants to cooperate with his party’s most important leaders from now on rather than constantly confronting them.
If Ryan respectfully declines, Trump could choose another figure to mainstream his candidacy — like Governors Susana Martinez of New Mexico, Brian Sandoval of Nevada, Nikki Haley of South Carolina, or John Kasich of Ohio.
Reports say Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich top current lists of potential running mates, but these two failed presidential candidates bring an abrasive style and histories of scandal that mirror Trump’s own. Polls show some 40 percent of Republicans still want another candidate for President but a reassuring VEEP choice before the convention could help unify the party.
