The latest real-estate decision by Facebook shows just how quickly the social media giant is growing in the Emerald City.

Seattle-based Vulcan, Inc., a Paul Allen company, announced Facebook will pre-lease two mid-rise office buildings in South Lake Union.

What are they building

“We’re excited to work with Facebook to help them expand their footprint in South Lake Union,” said Ada M. Healey, vice president of Real Estate at Vulcan, Inc., “We designed the Arbor Blocks with technology tenants in mind and Facebook is an ideal tenant to kick-off the project.”

The project project on Eighth Avenue North between Thomas and Harrison streets will feature 384,000 square feet of office space and 4,100 square feet of retail.

Facebook will be the sole tenant of the buildings, which will cost an estimated $246 million.

Construction on the new buildings, designed by Graphite Design Group, will begin by the end of the year.

Facebook opened its first engineering office in the city in 2010 near Pike Place. It then moved to the Metropolitan Park complex.

Earlier this year, the social media giant moved into a larger office in South Lake Union. The 10-story office building overlooking Lake Union gives Facebook “room to continue growing” in Seattle. There is room for about 2,000 employees.
