How should Dori respond to ‘super’ fan ready to dump Seahawks?

There are plenty of people who claim to be diehard fans but are in fact just caught up in the wave of an exciting bandwagon. It’s the nature of sports fandom. And sometimes it’s easy to be get carried away.

KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson encountered one of those 12’s via email, posting a plea for help from a Fremont man on his Facebook page.

The fan wrote that he no longer cared about the upcoming game because he felt “betrayed” over rumors of Pete Carroll going back to USC, and, more importantly over the Seahawks’ losing record.

“I’m just done with this team,” he wrote. “It just breaks my heart because for the past 2.5 season, I really feel like I’ve been bleeding with these guys. It was SO MUCH FUN watching them win the Super Bowl 2 years ago… I was mostly just a soccer fan before that, but that was the first time I really got into football. I bought a jersey and everything! But what am I supposed to do with it now? I didn’t even wear it last weekend because I was scared they would lose and then I would look like a moron. I just feel like it’s really a burn on us true fans who have supported these guys week after week and now they have a losing record!”

The email continues, saying he became a Seahawks fan “for the same reason as everyone does, because they are a team that wins… or at least, they used to.” He later asked Dori to talk him, a “super-Seahawk” fan, off this ledge.”

Dori noted that he prayed the satirical-sounding email was just that &#8212 satirical. But Dori’s Facebook fans didn’t take too kindly to the writer &#8212 taking offense to the man calling himself a true fan, noting that the writer misspelled head coach Pete Carroll’s name, and pleading for him to “go back to watching soccer.”

Former Seahawk Marcus Trufant joined the chorus of Facebookers who decried Seattle’s fair-weather fans. He told Dori that the Seahawks don’t want “fans that are gonna run as soon as there’s a little bit of turmoil, as soon as there’s a little wave in the water.”

“We don’t want fans like that,” he said. “We want fans that are going to stick it out, be there with the Hawks and then, when they do come on top, you’ll really be able to feel the satisfaction of riding the wave.”

The Barbershop’s Terry Hollimon said that he understands fans who are upset over the Seahawks’ early season struggles, especially following devastating fourth-quarter blown leads.

“I don’t expect you to be happy that they’re losing,” Hollimon said. “In fact, if you’re a good fan, I think you should be upset. But I don’t think you should be to the point where you’re talking about ‘I don’t know if I should watch the game or wear my jersey, or put on my special Seahawks underwear anymore.’ I think you should just ride with your team.”
