The Raiders are like a girlfriend who keeps breaking up with you

My heart goes out to Oakland Raider fans. If you’re a sports nut you might be saying, “Ron, what are you talking about bro?” Because the Raiders had one of the most epic wins last night against the Kansas City Chiefs. Not just epic for this season, it could be the instant classic game of the decade.

My heart goes out to Raider Nation because their team is slowly breaking that city’s heart — again. They have already announced they are moving to Las Vegas with the promise of a shiny new stadium and the deep pockets of the casino billionaires.

As much as I love the 12s, there’s not a more rabid fan base than Raider Nation. Things are different in the O. It’s a blue collar town. It’s tough, it’s rough around the edges, and that football team has perfectly matched the personality of its community for decades.

Very soon, they will be the Las Vegas Raiders. To make things worse, the team is good this year. In fact, when their quarterback is healthy, they are Super Bowl conversation good.

The first full-time job for the Ron & Don Show was to anchor the Oakland Raider radio network back in the late ’90s. We were there for the introduction of a young upstart head coach named Jon Gruden. We had lunch with Al Davis, and broadcasts with Hall of Fame Players like Fred Biletnikoff, Howie Long, and Bo Jackson. We were initiated into the Black Hole, and it was hard not to fall in love with the way East Bay fans root for the Silver and Black.

Last month, I went back and attended a game with a buddy of mine to see Marshawn Lynch play for his hometown team. Raiders games are a party. When you’re at a Hawks game, you can get a cocktail and eat a Pho Rito in the club level. At a Raiders game, you’ll find a DJ spinning E-40 tunes sponsored by Courvoisier while you eat your tri-tip. It’s just fun. Snap a photo with Darth Raider, a dedicated fan who wears a complete Darth Vader costume with a Raider jersey on even when it’s over a 100 degrees.

Now, Darth will have to make his way to Sin City for all the home games. It’s sad. The Raiders are like the best girlfriend you’ve ever had who keeps breaking up with you, then texts you late on Friday night and wants to come over.

I’m hoping that the Seahawks get it together and make a run for the Super Bowl, but if they don’t, I’d love to see Beastmode hoisting another Lombardi trophy for his boys in Oak-town.
