For Pete Carroll, ‘finishing’ is a point of emphasis for his team
Nov 4, 2016, 5:39 PM
Each week brings a new set of challenges for an NFL coach like Pete Carroll. Game-planning for next week’s opponent, evaluating injuries and dealing with unforeseen wrinkles in personnel are just part of the process. Coping with a loss that could have been a victory, especially one that came down to the last play of the game, is another component of the game that players and coaches alike need to process and put behind them.
This is of particularly importance for a team led by Pete Carroll, whose approach toward mental resolve and “finishing” was a central theme during his appearance on the Dori Monson Show.
“It sure is important to us,” said Carroll. “We emphasize the heck out of it, to get a mentality about finishing.”
Coach Carroll pointed to the two teams that just played a seven game World Series as prime examples of the persistence he preaches.
“Look how well both teams were finishing. They were both playing their hearts out, both functioning at a really high level,” listed Carroll. “That’s what you want to do. You want to be ready for the moments that challenge you the most to show what you’re capable of doing.”
The Seahawks square off against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. For Carroll’s players, the spotlight and national attention shouldn’t pose a problem.
“It’s being who you are and what you’re capable of being no matter what the circumstances are.”
The entire interview with Pete Carroll can be heard below. Discussion of finishing begins at 8:35.
