Shower thoughts: Wildfires, Seattle music, and Paul Manafort

shower thoughts...

(Jo Naylor, Flickr, MyNorthwest)

It’s another hazy day in the Pacific Northwest, let’s wash the smoke off and entertain this week’s Shower Thoughts: my random musings between shampoo and conditioner.

Wildfires and smoke

Is the whole country just going to catch on fire every summer? I gotta say that China is doing an amazing job with this whole global warming hoax. They’ve spared no expense to make it seem super realistic.

Have your cake

I used the phrase “Have her cake and eat it too” yesterday. Turns out I’ve been saying it wrong all my life. I was thinking, “Of course if you have your cake you’re going to eat your cake.” Why is this a saying? So I looked it up and it’s “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” That makes more sense. I’ll just file this with all the song lyrics I’ve been misquoting forever.

Guitar Center in South Lake Union

I know it’s not going to get the outcry that The Showbox received, but there are plans in the works to tear down the Guitar Center building in South Lake Union and put up a new tower for Google. I would wager that this downtown music store rivaled any venue in importance for the actual musicians in all the local bands we know and love. Countless instruments, pedals, and cables were purchased over the years in this spot. I bought more than one guitar there including my pink sparkle Fender Telecaster. So long Guitar Center, you’ll be missed.

Police Chief Carmen Best

Carmen Best is now the Chief of the Seattle Police Department. Congratulations to her. That was quite a bit of politically maneuvering. To go from not even in the running to the chief in under a month is very impressive. I’d love to be a fly on the wall for some of those closed door meetings along the way. Mayor Jenny Durkan did it with minimal egg on her face too. Feels like an episode of “The Wire” to me.

Paul Manafort

So Paul Manifort’s lawyers called exactly zero witnesses before resting their defense case. Is it me or does their legal strategy consist of expecting a presidential pardon? The only thing crazier than this legal strategy is that it will probably work.

This is our president

Speaking of politics, just think about this for a second. When called out for using the N-word, the most powerful man in the world called the African American woman accusing him “a dog.” There’s so much going on with this administration that things like this don’t even register anymore. He called her a dogin writing.

The Mariners

Six weeks ago the Mariners looked like a lock to break their playoff drought. Now they have just a 17 percent chance to make the post season according the stats blog on fivethirtyeight.com. Oh bother.

Seattle streetcar

I passed the street car last night on my way home as the afternoon rush hour was coming to a close. There were exactly zero people on it. None. Can we just say the street car experiment in this current form has failed and put a bullet in it?

That’s it – no more shower thoughts for today.

You can hear “What are we talking about here?” everyday at 4:45 p.m. on 97.3 FM.
