A UPS driver was attacked by four pit bulls while trying to deliver to a house in the Puyallup area on Wednesday.

Pierce County Animal Control’s Brian Boman told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson the driver called 911 to say that he was attacked by a group of dogs and he was bleeding.

Bowman told Dori that the man dragged himself onto a utility trailer to escape the dogs and call for help.

Police told KIRO 7 that a relative of the dogs’ owner was at the house but refused to unlock the gate. The fire department rammed the gate, drove down the long driveway to the victim, and pulled him through a window into their vehicle.

“I believe they rammed the gate due to the dogs still being on the property to avoid further injuries to anyone else,” Boman said.

The victim, who was taken to the hospital, has multiple bite wounds on his arms, legs and hands, but Boman couldn’t confirm the number of wounds.

Investigators recovered the driver’s boots and belt from the scene. The driver said he tried to use his belt to defend himself from the dogs and that his boots were pulled off by the animals during the attack.

Boman said the dogs are in a 10-day quarantine at the Humane Society in Tacoma, which is standard. The investigating officer will make a recommendation on the course of action to take against the homeowner.

KIRO 7 contributed to this report.
