We need more good cop stories like this

Another police officer has been caught on camera during a tense situation, but this time the officer is being praised for his actions.

Albuquerque, NM police officer Martin Smith was caught on his body camera saving the life of a 7-month-old infant that stopped breathing.

“I arrived on scene walked in. The mom, you hear her in the background, she’s a little frantic,” Martin told the press. “The baby is not breathing … the baby was blue. As I walked in to check on it, I reached down and gave a couple breaths, and started rubbing her chest and kept blowing in her face like you do with a puppy.”

The baby then began moving her fingers and woke up.

The video sheds light on an aspect of police work that has been overshadowed by other recent videos displaying negative actions of officers.

“We see all these videos that go viral, and these videos should go viral when you see police doing something that they shouldn’t do,” KIRO Radio’s Don O’Neil. “When I looked at this video today I thought, ‘Here’s another video that should go viral,’ but it wasn’t going viral.”

“Maybe we would have heard this story, but we wouldn’t have seen this story if he wasn’t wearing a body camera,” Don said, noting that he encourages officers to wear body cameras.

“I think it is so important that they do wear body cameras because then you see stories like this, and we wouldn’t have seen this if Officer Smith didn’t have his body camera on,” he said. “Ninety-nine percent of the time, this is what police officers are doing day-in and day-out.”

Another recent police interaction was captured by photo and posted online, showing two Tacoma police officers that responded to a disturbance. While exiting the scene, they noticed two kids playing basketball and took the time to play a game.

“That needs to be part of the narrative too, because the pendulum has swung so swiftly the other way,” Don said, contrasting it to another recent viral video from Texas showing a cop pulling a gun on teens at a pool party.

“Most police officers I know are very, very humble, however, when you do recognize them, it’s meaningful,” said co-host Ron Upshaw.
