What are they building? New K-8 school replacing Pinehurst in Northgate neighborhood

Only the footprint of a school near Northgate remains after crews demolished it earlier this year.

Pinehurst was torn down to make way for a new school in the Seattle Public School District.

Construction of a building that will house the Hazel Wolf K-8 program will start this spring. The new school will be approximately 83,000 square feet. It will hold up to 680 students.

The school will include classrooms surrounding a shared learning area for art, music, science labs, childcare, a library and gymnasium.

Along with demolition, phase one of the project includes installation of water facilities, loop wells, and preparation of the building pad.

The building will sport sustainable features, including higher energy efficiency and monitoring systems. Heat loss reduction, for example, will be about 13 percent better than what is required by Washington State Energy Code, according to Seattle Schools.

The site will include a natural turf ball field, and hard and soft play areas with equipment.

The project is being funded through the Seattle Public Schools Building Excellence IV Capital Levy. The levy was approved by voters in February 2013.

The new school is expected to open in the fall of 2016.
Pinehurst K-8, which opened in the 1950s, was recommended for closure in 2013.
