GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Guyana ’s government said Saturday it has received the first of six deportees from the United States under the Trump administration’s third-country deportation system.

Guyana’s Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud said the six nationals of Cuba and Afghanistan arrived on Friday after being vetted by his administration and found to have no criminal backgrounds. He added the group was kicked of the U.S. primarily because of immigration issues.

Persaud said his administration reached an agreement to host the deportees after months of negotiations. He also told The Associated Press that “the U.S. has not made any further requests.” The arrangement will run for a year and does not constitute permanent resettlement, he said.

Those relocated to Guyana under the Assisted Voluntary Return Program will await the outcome of their immigration status determination while in Guyana. They could ultimately return to their country of origin or be relocated somewhere else.

The U.N. International Organization for Migration is responsible for implementing the program, authorities in Guyana said, adding that the government will not bear any housing or supporting costs.

Guyana, a founding member of the 15-nation Caribbean Community, is the latest of several member states to have received small groups of U.S. deportees. Others include St. Kitts and Nevis, Belize and St. Lucia, which was due to accept its first group this week, officials said.

Clergy candidates’ message of ‘love your neighbor’ powers Democrats’ midterm election gains

Clergy members and other Democratic candidates with an unapologetically Christian message to “love your neighbor” helped their party flip control of Congress. It was a striking midterm victory that demonstrated the strength of the religious left as a counter to the stalwart evangelical support for President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans. “This attempt to […]

Latino voters swing left in midterm elections, lifting Democrats to big wins in Texas and nationwide

SAN JUAN, Texas (AP) — Latino voters moved sharply to the left in the midterm elections, propelling Democrats to an improbable electoral sweep in Texas and in battleground House races from coast to coast. It’s a remarkable pivot for a demographic that had shifted toward President Donald Trump just two years ago. “We showed our […]

Data centers took a beating in the midterm elections. A reckoning may be ahead for tech giants

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — After a campaign season filled with outrage against data centers, the midterm elections ushered in a wave of Democrats pledging to clamp down on the energy-hungry behemoths. A tougher regulatory environment for artificial intelligence giants and data center developers is expected to follow, even if President Donald Trump — perhaps the […]

As Congress returns to Democrats, one likely casualty emerges: Trump’s District of Columbia projects

WASHINGTON (AP) — In his first public appearance after an election that soundly repudiated his policies, President Donald Trump turned to a topic both familiar and, given the context, surprising: not his policies or politics, but his efforts to remake pieces of the city that is the backdrop to his presidency. Despite Trump’s affinity for […]
