Redmond is rearranging its roads: What will happen to parking?

The City of Redmond is moving forward with a plan to eliminate one-way streets.

Emma sent KIRO Radio a message asking how the switch will affect the highly-prized parking in town.

Hey guys, this whole Redmond not having one way streets is all well and dandy but what is going to happen to my street parking? If they are adding pavement for a lane, it seems that they need to get it from somewhere. Will the city lose precious street parking?

According to Don Cairns, the Transportation Planning & Engineering Manager for Redmond, the change to Redmond’s roads has been long in the making.

“Changing Redmond Way and Cleveland Street back to two-way streets is the culmination of a plan approved in 2002 to ‘reclaim downtown streets’ and provide a ‘street grid’ of two-way streets to make Redmond more walkable, bikeable, transit-oriented and accessible for people who want to be in downtown,” Cairns said.

Parking is noticeably crazy everywhere as more and more people move to the Northwest. Sure, public transit is an option but Emma has a good point &#8212 what will happen to the street parking in Redmond after the switch to two-lane roads?

Don’t worry. Cairns explains:

“The changes will add more on-street parking to Redmond Way and maintain the parking on Cleveland Street. Destination drivers who work, live and come to downtown Redmond for services will appreciate the change since getting around with the one-way streets has been a major complaint.”

So there you go Emma, more parking is headed your way, not less. Try and save us a space, will ya?
