They say birds of a feather flock together. But a couple of amorous eagles seem to have taken it far enough to need some intervention from a Seattle police officer who put herself between a couple of love birds and bystanders in a local park.

The Seattle Police Department says Officer Vanessa Flick was driving past Leschi Park Wednesday afternoon when she spotted a large crowd gathered around a bald eagle on a paved pathway.

Turns out it was actually two eagles “erotically entwined,” as SPD staffer Jonah Spangenthal-Lee puts it.

“At first glance, I did not detect any movement from the eagle and assumed it was deceased, but then observed that the bird was blinking and breathing,” Officer Flick wrote in her report. “Upon closer inspection I noted that there were, in fact, two bald eagles on the path.”

A bystander who claimed to know a lot about bald eagles told the officer he believed they locked talons and got stuck after taking part in “a mating ritual” and spiraled to the ground.

Officer Flick called in the Seattle Animal Shelter to help with the birds, who turned out to not be dead – just understandably dead tired.

After a well-earned break, the eagles recovered sufficiently and majestically took to the sky as the crowd in the park burst into cheers and applause, Flick said.

“I felt wind on my face and heard flapping,” Officer Flick wrote, “The two were taking off in flight together.”
