Beauty pageants aren’t for everyone, but the Miss Seattle competition really tries to set itself apart by emphasizing the scholarship part of the contest.
Over 60 percent of a contestant’s score is based on a private interview, talent competition, and an on-stage question.
A dozen young women competed over the weekend, and Lauren Kuhn was crowned Miss Seattle 2011.

Kuhn’s hometown is Aberdeen. She’s going to Gonzaga University and wants to be an orthodontist.
What asked about what event has shaped her dreams and aspirations, Kuhn says having a medical condition that was not diagnosed for a decade had a big impact on her. She suffered from hypothyroidism since she was an infant. Along with being fatigued and having kidney troubles, she underwent several surgeries.
“I realize how precious life is and I’m grateful for the little things that make me smile,” she says.
