A three-alarm fire destroyed one home and threatened several others in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood Friday night.

The wind-whipped fire started on the back deck of a two-story house, then spread inside and onto a carport.

Eventually the flames spread to the first and second floors and were shooting out of all four sides of the house.

Two people inside the residence were able to escape without getting hurt.

The fire also knocked down electrical wires which then fell onto the north side of the home.

That prevented firefighters from entering the house, and resulted in the fire battalion upgrading the response from a two-alarm fire, to three-alarm.

Firefighters established a defensive stance, aiming water hoses at the flames from a safe distance, while protecting homes next to the burning structure.

The fire department also set up a ladder truck in front of the fire, to spray water from a higher vantage point.

Flames did damage homes next door, but firefighters were able to prevent the fire from extending further.

Crews had the fire out by about 8:30 p.m., but had to evacuate neighboring homes as a precaution.

The Seattle Fire Department has issued an advisory regarding water quality in the Leschi neighborhood, as a result of the fire:

Important note for residents within a two-block radius of the fire: Firefighters accessed multiple hydrants to fight the fire. If your tap water is discolored be sure to run cold water for a few minutes to see if it clears up. If it does not, let the water sit for a few hours, then try running cold water again. Avoid using hot water while the cold tap is discolored as this can fill your water tank with turbid water.   – Seattle Fire Department
