Pets displaced by California fires arrive in Seattle shelters

Cats and dogs displaced from shelters by the recent Camp fire in California arrived in Seattle Tuesday afternoon.

Seattle Humane is going to take up to 300 pets from California shelters after the animals were displaced by the devastating wildfires. Roughly 25 to 60 pets arrived at Sea-Tac airport on Tuesday.
More animals will arrive on several flights over the next month. Because of restrictions on crates per flight, Seattle Humane staff and volunteers will also be driving to Yreka, California on Wednesday and Saturday to transfer larger dogs.
The organization will not be taking animals who were separated from their owners, and instead will focus on relieving overcrowding in shelters.
The initial collection of animals that arrived in Seattle on Tuesday was mostly cats, but Seattle Humane is focusing special attention on dogs due to lack of space.
“If you know anyone who’s looking to adopt, or you yourself have been considering adopting an animal, our greatest need is to help move dogs out of our dorms to make space for the dogs coming from California,” Seattle Human Public Relations Specialist Amanda Anderson told KIRO Radio.
In total, some estimates place the total number of animals displaced by the Camp fire in California at over 10,000, including dogs, cats, horses, chickens, cows, and at least one tortoise.
Seattle Humane is asking for donations to help move more pets from affected areas in California, and is also encouraging the local community to come in and adopt.
