There are four female Democrats in Congress – and I think you know who they are – who have been outspoken critics of President Trump’s immigration policy. And the president was so fed up that he fired off a tweet at those “Progressive Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe…”
And he recommended that they ought to go back to their countries of origin and “help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
And that got peoples attention. Even Geraldo Rivera, who considers Trump a pal, called it racist.
The ongoing struggle for civility on Twitter
I should point out that only one of the women he referred to was actually born abroad, but the president knows that nothing ruins a good line like details.
In any case, another thought occurred to me. If Twitter had been around in the 1600s, when it was desperate Puritans migrating from England, Native American chieftains would have tweeted the very same thing.
“Why don’t you Puritans go back and fix your own totally broken crime-infested country instead of hunting witches here!”
But that wouldn’t have worked either.
And it wouldn’t have stopped the four and a half million Irish who came, the five million Germans, the four million Italians, or the two million Jews (not to mention the thousands of people brought in forcibly as slaves).
And yet somehow, by utterly failing to keep all those impoverished strangers out we became the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth.
No need for the census, the info was there all along
