Jul 28, 2022, 5:09 PM

An RV encampment was cleared this morning at Fairview Ave and Newton St., near Terry Pettus Park, in and none of the 12 identified residents accepted offers of relocation into a shelter.

The city’s Homelessness Outreach and Provider Ecosytem (HOPE) team had previously identified 12 residents at the site and has been engaged since July 7 with offering shelter and services up until the time of the sweep.

Longtime homeless camp along Green River becomes focus of proposed pilot program

As of July 26, city data has shown that none of the residents have accepted any of the shelter offers.

Signs were posted warning of the removal, with “no parking” signs placed up and around the site and Seattle Department of Transit reaching out to occupants to notify about the sweep.

For its shelters, the city partners with the King County Regional Homelessness Authority on homelessness outreach and referrals to shelters, as well as many other non-profit outreach providers.

Speaking to a representative from the city about why the RV camp was removed, it was explained when the city does these removals regularly, a series of factors are considered, including local crime, total shots fired, fires, and other safety data to “ensure a comprehensive review and objective prioritization criteria.”

Any personal items removed from the site are stored per city policy. People can retrieve their items by calling the city, and a pickup or delivery will be arranged.
