Now that it looks like California won’t be getting a high speed rail system anytime soon, the search is on for an alternative. And here it is.

“Imagine lanes on our local highways with no speed limits, you can go as fast as your heart desires,” reports CBS Sacramento.

Yes. In Sacramento, State Senator John Moorlach – inspired by the German Autobahn – wants to add a pair of no-speed-limit-lanes to sections Interstate 5 and Highway 99 between Bakersfield and Stockton. Drivers could go as fast as they want.

“The freeway accidents on the Autobahn are a lot less than what’s happening on our roads. So why don’t we provide people with vehicles the opportunity to just drive at 100 mph, get to San Francisco in  shorter period of time than the train would.”

Now, 100 miles an hour is fast. But it’s less than half the speed of the high-speed train. And if we’re comparing this to the German Autobahn – anyone driving 100 on that stretch of road, would have to use warning blinkers. I saw that a Porsche was once clocked doing 236. That’s because in Europe they pay for smooth roads. But here in the U.S., we really don’t do smooth. Our roads tend to look like old work pants.

Anyway, I wish him well, but I think the only way you’re going to drive up to San Francisco at 100 miles an hour is if  you’re willing to leave your muffler in Fresno.

The more I read the post-election analysis, the more I’m convinced voters weren’t just voting for a change – they were voting for a hormone.
