Work on the south side of the Seattle tunnel project is again underway, this time above ground.

The skeleton of the new south operations building can be seen from the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

The building sits on the south side of South King Street, just north of the tunnel entrance. It will house maintenance vehicles, ventilation fans, and emergency power.

Much of the underground structural construction is complete, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. Crews are beginning to install electrical systems while the building is erected on the surface.

Meanwhile, the tunnel boring machine, Bertha, is under repair. Bertha is expected to resume tunneling in August. The tunnel is scheduled to open to traffic at the end of 2017.
