Ross: The frog in the salad — what would you do?

It was a normal day at the Allen home in Glendale Wisconsin when Karlie Allen noticed something strange about the organic salad she had just brought home from her local supermarket.

“Oh my god, it’s literally alive!” she said in a video capturing the entire incident.

Visible through the plastic container was a little frog, comfortably nestled in the pile of lettuce.

Of course she took out her phone and recorded video of the scene. She sent the video to the produce company, demanding answers.

“What the heck, how did that get in there, and two, that is absolutely disgusting,” she told a news reporter.

The company, of course, refunded her money, and provided this explanation:

“USDA Certified Organic items must be free of synthetic additives and certain pesticides. Although rare, from time-to-time we do see insects and other small animals such as frogs make it through packaging.”

A refreshing example of corporate candor, which tells me, yeah, that lettuce was organic.

Let me ask you this: Would you rather that the frog had been dead? That lettuce was so organic, and so frogicide free, and so gently packaged, that a living frog made it all the way to Karlie’s kitchen. I’ve had pet frogs that didn’t last that long.

So I can tell you, had that have been my salad, I would have said, “Well done, organic farm.” Then I would have released the frog, washed the lettuce, and served it that night.

I would not have told my wife, however. Candor only goes so far.
