$73M expansion approved for Pike Place Market

A Seattle City Council committee approved spending $73 million to expand Pike Place Market to the waterfront.
The Central Waterfront, Seawall, and Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program Select Committee made the unanimous approval Monday. The plan is to include more stalls for vendors, additional parking, 30,000 square feet of open space and senior housing.

Public pathways will be built to connect the market and Alaskan Way, after the viaduct is torn down.
The money for the expansion comes from state parking mitigation funds, the city, private fundraising, grants, tax credits and bonds.
“Expanding the Pike Place Market, the first addition in 40 years, is a significant milestone for the waterfront,” Councilmember Jean Godden said. “From increased public housing to new public access and some of the best views in the city, this is a win for Seattle.”
