A couple in their late 60s were found in a home filled with animals living in their own feces on Sunday.

Mason County deputies were called to the home in the 100 block of East Blackhawk Court in Belfair on a welfare check. Deputies found the couple in poor health and in need of medical attention. A few dogs were found dead in the home.

Thirty to 40 Pekingese puppies were in the home, along with birds, cats and some snakes.

“Responding deputies were required to put on hazmat suits in order to care for all the animals, because the conditions of the interior of the residence was layered in filth and animal feces,” a news release read.

The man and woman were transported to Harrison Hospital in
Bremerton.

Animal control units were called to the home to assist with rescue.
